Yet another reason not to offer your child fast food or fast food: kids who eat junk food get worse grades. The fast food has always been closely related to high rates of childhood obesity, but the ingestion of this type of food has more negative consequences for the health of children, and it is that evidence has been found that relates the consumption of this type of food with a poor school performance, which translates into poor grades.
In the United States, more than 12,000 students have been monitored for eating habits. Those who were in fifth grade were asked how much fast food they had eaten in the last week (the survey was not necessarily done the same week as the academic assessment) and then compared the frequency of fast food consumed with the academic achievements between the fifth and eighth grades.
The researchers found that students who ate more fast food overall had slower growth in academic performance.
Students who reported eating fast food once a day had slower development in subjects such as math, language and science that students who did not eat fast food, that is, the more fast food a student ate, the worse grades they obtained. "High levels of fast food consumption predicted lower growth in all three academic subjects," said the head of the study.
The declines were most pronounced in subjects like math. If students reported that they ate some fast food, their evaluations showed low marks for that subject. But there is more: the worst grades were obtained by those who confessed to eating fast food four to six times a week or daily.
And a fact that reflects the study and that has to make us reflect on how we are feeding our children: less than 30% of the participants had not tried any type of fast food in the week before it; about half of the participants had eaten fast food one to three times that week; 10% had eaten it four to six times, and the remaining 10% ate fast food every day.
It is clear that we cannot compare a hamburger that we eat in a restaurant with one that we make at home. At home, you choose the quality of the food and the way to prepare it, hence the researchers point out that fast food that we can buy locally does not have the adequate nutrients that children need to develop optimally: junk food does not have enough iron and has too much fat and added sugar.
Why do children eat this kind of food? The study tries to answer this question and, among the factors to take into account, it highlights:
